MINISTERIUM FÜR STAATSSICHERHEIT (MfS)

The official title of the  East German security and intelligence apparatus often known as the Stasi. Created in October 1949 with the founding of the German Democratic Republic, the MfS was an efficient instrument of repression, which by its dissolution in 1990 had 70,000 uniformed and civilian employees, with an estimated 173,000 paid informers.
