The discipline of signals analysis, within the broader category of  signals intelligence, covers the spectrum from

The identification of the sender and receiver, the call signs, and the technology involved and the study of the encrypted cipher groups may reveal a large amount of useful information even if the actual content of the message itself remains unread.
