Code-named GT/GENTILE by the Central Intelligence Agency and PIMENTA by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Martynov was a Line X scientific intelligence officer under cultural attaché cover in Washington, D.C., who had been recruited as an ideologically motivated agent in 1980. When he returned to Moscow in January 1985, he was arrested and executed after he had been identified as a spy by Aldrich Ames.
