MACRAME

The Central Intelligence Agency code name for a Soviet pilot, decorated for his service in Afghanistan, who in 1990 volunteered to spy for the CIA while posted as an instructor to Leipzig, East Germany. MACRAME supplied photographs of the flight manuals for the MiG-29 before he was exfiltrated with his wife to be resettled in the United States. Originally code-named SPANIEL, he had objected when he had learned his code name, so his case officer was obliged to change it.
