Code-named GT/MEDIAN by the Central Intelligence Agency, Potashev was an arms control negotiator at the Soviet Institute for United States of America and Canada Studies who had spied since 1981. He was arrested in Moscow in July 1985 and executed after being identified as a spy by Aldrich Ames.
